With the first quarter of the year drawing to a close, it's a perfect time to check-in on your 2025 SMART goals.
Research indicates that annual reviews in isolation aren't effective. Regular progress reviews throughout the year keep goals on track and create opportunities to celebrate small wins along the way.
Here are four steps for conducting a thorough self-review:
1. Goal Validation
Begin by re-examining your SMART goals. Considering what has happened in Q1 and what you've learned so far, do your goals still align with the long-term strategy? Do you need to make some adjustments? It is early enough in the year to validate your goals and make necessary changes without disrupting operations.
Do not hesitate to make modifications or eliminate a goal altogether if proven to be irrelevant for the future, replace it with a more beneficial goal if necessary. It is much better to do this now than to waste time on something that won’t add value later.
2. Progress Tracking & Documentation
Keep comprehensive records of your progress toward each goal. No one knows details of your hard work but you; it is your responsibility to document your achievements before sitting down with your manager. Include supporting evidence of work well done such as customer “thank you” notes and e-mails from colleagues.
Avoid making the mistake of waiting till the end of the year to document your progress as you risk forgetting some of your wins. Documenting the smallest steps throughout the year will be valuable during the year-end review and reduce potential biases when rating your performance.
Be sure to note resources you’ve used, those you might need in the future, and how you plan to secure them. Document challenges, their sources and actions you have taken to address them.
There are several sophisticated tracking tools to pick from. However, a simple Excel worksheet will suffice to track progress; the idea is to use some technology to help you stay on top of your tasks.
3. Development Path
Keep track of your learnings and developmental needs. These might include formal training you wish to undertake, projects you would like to participate in, coaching, mentorship or opportunities to engage with senior staff. These channels support career advancement and expose you to future opportunities.
Taking ownership of your development journey demonstrates your commitment to personal growth and positions you for potential leadership roles.
4. Positive Outlook
Always maintain a positive, "can-do" attitude. Be adaptable to whatever comes your way and use it as a chance for growth, rather than seeing it as a barrier to success. Seek out solutions to problems and collaborate with those around you. Do not be a lonely martyr in face of challenges.
