Defining Leadership Power

Common dictionaries define power as the possession of control, authority or command over others or events, whether through physical or non-physical means. Using physical power against someone is unequivocally assault; it is a criminal act with serious legal repercussions regardless of the extent of harm.
Non-physical power often involves threats of punishment, withholding rewards, or withdrawing benefits. Other ways of exercising non-physical power include the promise of commitment, support or knowledge (or lack of thereof) if certain conditions are met. The word “Power” in itself has overly masculine connotations that may not resonate with everyone, no matter their gender.
Exercising power as defined in the dictionary is the fastest route to destroy the essence of leadership. If it delivers results, they are short-lived. Using power at the expense of another by means of demeaning them or subjecting them to unfavorable conditions is a reflection of the person wielding said power, rather than the recipient. It projects poorly on their character.
It is also worth noting the ‘carrot and stick’ approach to compel others to do certain tasks, or as a method of motivation, is an ideology of the past. It is no longer relevant, nor does it yield desired results in the long run. Leadership power is not about exerting power over others or taking power away from them. It is fundamentally the opposite of the conventional definition of the word.
So, what is power in context of leadership?
At Awe Horizons, we define leadership power as the ability to control one’s destiny in a way that leaves a memorable legacy. Ability to control one’s emotions and subsequent actions especially during challenging times. Contrary to popular belief, there is strength in gentleness and in handling situations calmly with composure. Power lies in the ability to have a positive impact on others and help them excel.
The only true power a leader has is in making people feel good and excited to participate in whatever task the leader wants them to do. A powerful leader has the capacity to help people see, and believe, in the significance of their contribution.
But here is a revelation, the definition of power is personal, it can mean different things to different people. Achieving set goals within agreed boundaries might demonstrate power to some. Managing time effectively, cutting costs or gaining experience could be sources of power for others.
You don’t have to adopt our definition of power. The point of this blog is to encourage readers to embrace a broader understanding of power and re-evaluate their own sources of positive influence. We hope to inspire readers to reflect on what power means to them personally before adopting a style that is aligned with their authentic selves.
I’d like to close with a few final thoughts on power. Firstly, power is always relative, its dynamics are forever shifting; the person who has power today, might not have it tomorrow! Secondly, power exists only to the extent that it is accepted, it has no effect when it is not recognized. Lastly, power has its limits, and exceeding these limits can be destructive even in the scope of our definition. Hence, power must be exercised with caution.
