This November, and before we break for Thanksgiving celebrations, we uncover the power of giving thanks in itself.
Now more than ever we need to express gratitude no matter the circumstance.
Gratitude for our health and safety.
Gratitude for our state of mind.
Gratitude for being able to hug loved ones.
Gratitude for the ability to provide for our families.
Gratitude for our skills and experiences.
Gratitude for our employees.
There is much strength in saying Thank You. Not only does it make people feel good, but it pushes them to want to deliver more. It is a fundamental aspect of human nature to feel motivated to do more when efforts are recognized and appreciated.
Expressing gratitude does not require much. Simple acknowledgments would suffice; a friendly greeting, a warm smile or an approving nod can shift moods and work wonders.
Practice saying “thank you” as often as you can starting from today. Give gratitude even if the person is doing what is expected of them. Be an advocate for good performers and provide opportunities for them to showcase their work. Praise those going over and beyond their line of duty and make sure they know the reason for your appreciation of them. Whenever possible, follow the praise with a personalized reward.
Watch the response of the individual you are expressing gratitude to and pay attention to their subsequent actions. There is a high chance that your acknowledgment of their efforts creates a ripple effect within their teams. This effect carries forward throughout the organization resulting in a gratifying environment.
Last but not least, do not forget to thank yourself as well. Take a moment to be grateful for your skills, intuitions and decisions that guided you thus far. All past experiences, positive and negative, stemming from chance or hurdle, have contributed to making you the unique individual you are today.
Happy thanksgiving season!
